“Stevie #2” is loosely painted with textured moments all over. With a golden reflection on his face, you can feel the heat of the sunshine as it sits on his skin.
The background is a greenish lite blue sky with many shades of green depicting grass from a field in nature. Inspiration was pulled directly from photos Stevie Wonder shot for his 1972 album, “Talking Book”.
He’s wearing sunglasses that reflect the blazing sun, adding a sense of black cool and futurism. His neck is elongated in my signature style, which symbolizes holding your head high with dignity & pride, and looking towards the future.
Oil is the primary medium used in this picture and it is rendered very softly adding a vintage element to the work that shoots you right back to the 70’s. This picture feels like a summer day.
Audio enhanced for the visually impaired.
About the Artist
Brandon Deener (b. 1982, Memphis, TN) is a self-taught artist living and working in Los Angeles. The figures in Deener’s paintings and works on paper are instantly identifiable by his signature elongation of their necks. This distinctive gesture indicates Black pride and dignity and harkens to ritual practices employed by various tribes across Africa. While his characters are surreal, he grants them charming familiarity with titles like “French braid over the kitchen” and “Drama at the family reunion”. Deener’s take on Afro-futurism conveys a confidence and optimism that the best is yet to come.
